About this role

Essential Functions

The library assistant is one of the direct contacts for the library and plays a vital part in providing resources to students, staff, and faculty.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Managing patron accounts
  • Assisting patrons through the check-in and check-out process
  • Providing a general overview of the library resources, both physical and digital
  • Aiding in the necessary prep and execution of library events
  • Creating themed book displays
  • Providing reader’s advisory
  • Answering reference questions
  • Basic filing and organizing
  • Shelving books and materials utilizing the Library of Congress Classification System
  • Performing basic troubleshooting for library hardware/software
  • Answering technological questions regarding library services
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED. Be enrolled at least part-time for the duration of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent customer service skills; knowledge of basic computer software such as Microsoft Office; experience in basic computer troubleshooting; strong organizational skills; the ability to multitask as well as carry out tasks with limited supervision; and a willingness to learn. Previous library experience preferred, but not required.

Supplemental Information

Other Duties:
Working on Fridays and some evenings for events may be required.

Travel Requirements:
None.

Environment:
Work is generally performed in an office setting with frequent interruptions and changes in the workflow/volume. May require some outdoor work for CBC events.
