Assistant Professor - Literature, Media, and Writing

The Spelman College Department of Literature, Media, and Writing (formerly Department of English) embraces an expansive vision of language and visual culture. Our curriculum promotes evidence-based argumentation; the pleasures of reading literary, theoretical, and visual texts; critical interpretation as a social necessity; and an awareness of how literary and visual cultures are integral to a free and just society. With deep roots in the genealogies of Black feminism, our curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, aesthetic appreciation, and ethical commitments in order to provide our students a foundation in humanistic knowledge that is important to all fields.

The Department seeks to invite applicants for a tenure-track professorship in Writing and/or Rhetorical Studies to begin Fall 2027. The area of specialization is open, but preference will be given to candidates with a research and/or teaching focus in African American rhetorics; digital storytelling, multimedia journalism, and content creation; marketing and public relations; and/or writing and AI. A PhD in Rhetoric and Composition, Communications, English, African American Studies, or related field is required and must be completed by July 2027. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research and publishing agenda in Writing and/or Rhetorical Studies; to teach a range of rhetoric and writing courses for the department (3-3 load), including first-year writing; and to support as part of their institutional service the initiatives of the college’s Comprehensive Writing Program.
