Assistant Professor - Sociology

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Spelman College seeks a tenure-track Assistant or tenured Associate Professor to begin in August 2027. The ideal candidate will bring a strong and complementary combination of theoretical, methodological, and substantive expertise. We welcome applicants with a proven ability to teach courses in classical and contemporary sociological theory, and with expertise in any of the following areas: gender and sexuality studies, global and transnational sociology, human rights, food studies, digital sociology, technology and society, political sociology & social movements, economic sociology, environmental sociology, public/engaged sociology, demography, and community-based research. The department is particularly excited by candidates whose scholarship and teaching reflect a feminist methodological lens as well as strong quantitative and computational expertise. Furthermore, candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to social justice and anti-racism through their teaching and research are particularly encouraged to apply.

This position carries a 3:2 teaching load. The department seeks a scholar who can rotate teaching core departmental courses, such as History of Social Thought, Contemporary Social Theory, Survey of Research Methods, Multivariate Analysis, Sociological Imagination, and the Senior Thesis capstone. The candidate must also be able to offer upper-level Sociology elective courses in their area of specialization.
