Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) in Biology, Medicine or a closely related field in hand by the start of the appointment. Have at least one first-author original publication in a highly regarded peer-reviewed journal in the field of cancer, cardiovascular disease, or immunology research.
Preferred Qualification:
Laboratory research experience with hematopoietic stem cell biology, cardiovascular diseases, and immunology.
Job Description:
The Zhan Lab is seeking highly motivated individuals to join our research team investigating hematopoietic stem cell biology, myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), clonal hematopoiesis, and cardiovascular disease. Our research focuses on understanding how hematopoietic mutations interact with the bone marrow microenvironment to drive clonal expansion and disease progression, with a particular emphasis on the JAK2V617F mutation. Using genetically engineered mouse models, transplantation studies, and molecular and cellular approaches, we investigate how the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) niche—particularly megakaryocytes and vascular endothelial cells—regulates mutant HSC expansion and persistence. We also study competition between normal and mutant HSCs, with the goal of identifying mechanisms that enhance normal HSC fitness and suppress mutant clonal expansion. A major area of the laboratory’s research examines the mechanisms linking JAK2V617F-mutant hematopoiesis to cardiovascular disease, including thrombosis, vascular dysfunction, and cardiac disease. Our work integrates stem cell biology, vascular biology, clonal hematopoiesis, and cardiovascular research to identify novel disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies for MPNs and their cardiovascular complications.
The Postdoctoral Associate will support basic science and pre-clinical research. The ideal candidate shall possess strong scientific and technical skills, critical thinking ability, and a thoughtful approach to troubleshooting. A strong work ethic, resilience, and motivation are essential, along with openness to developing a research niche that complements ongoing projects. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are also required.
Specific Duties:
● Plan experiments and technical requirements, prepare and test specimens.
● Analyze data and present the results at various scientific meetings, prepare the manuscripts and grants.
● Maintains laboratory equipment/supplies/facilities. Execute the administrative aspects of the study plan including preparing research-related documents.
● Other duties as assigned.
