Substitute

Primary Purpose:

Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core academic subject areas or the area assigned and follow the plans left by the teacher. Present lessons and provide instructional assistance to students. Assist in preparing, conducting, and managing classroom activities.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or hold a General Educational Development (GED) certification

Have met formal academic assessment, associate's degree, or two years of study at an institution of higher learning*

Valid Texas educational aide certificate or teaching certificate preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, mathematics, science and assist in all educational settings

Ability to work well with children

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Pass a background check prior to working

Experience:

Some experience working with children (preferred)

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Support

• Provide instruction to students; work with individual students or small groups.
• Assist in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
• Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
• Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
• Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
• Help keep administrative records and prepare the required reports as needed.

Student Management and Organization

• Help supervise students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, before & after school, and playground duty.
• Make the administration aware of special needs or problems of individual students.
• Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
• Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Communication

• Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

Other

• Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures and possess the ability to relocate students as needed.
• Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
• Be a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.
• Be flexible with the substitute assignment placement.
• Wear name tag and Centegix badge at all times.
• Keep the classroom door locked and do not prop open any doors.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; [P.E. teachers: automated external defibrillator (AED)]

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking
Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment
Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
