Qualifications:

Associates Degree or Paralegal Certificate

3-years paralegal experience required

Proficient software experience with Microsoft Office Suite and web-based applications

Proficient technology and file maintenance skills

Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills

Initiative and good judgment in working with public, employees, and administrators

Excellent clerical skills with productivity under pressure

Ability to follow procedures with minimal supervision

Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality

Exhibit strong public relations skills

Familiarity with Board Policy and legal statutes

Experience working in family law and/or educational organization (preferred)

Bilingual (preferred)

Primary Purpose:

Perform highly responsible and confidential administrative work to support the Office of the General Counsel. Research and analyze legal statutes, and family and governmental codes in order to respond to campus, departmental, and parent inquiries. Other duties include reviewing and summarizing divorce decrees, reviewing subpoenas for authenticity, monitoring the timeline and process for student complaints, and operating a policy help desk. Handle confidential and sensitive information and maintain positive interactions with both internal personnel and external parties.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a resource for ADAs and registrars regarding family-related court documents.
  • Operate a policy help desk to assist employees, parents, and patrons.
  • Assist with revision of policies and administrative regulations or processes as needed.
  • Maintain a tracking, monitoring, and filing system for student complaints.
  • Assist in coordinating and facilitating District-level appeal hearings regarding student complaints.
  • Provide assistance in reviewing and/or revising letters written in response to formal student complaints.
  • Assists departments, campuses, and parents by reviewing and summarizing the provisions in divorce decrees and other legal documents such as protective orders, appointments of guardian or attorney ad litems, or CASAs, related to access to student information and student pickup so that all parties understand what rights have been delegated to each parent.
  • Assist campus administrators with subpoenas, court orders, and other legal documents.
  • Serve as a liaison with attorneys in an effort to reduce the number of individuals required to appear in court in a given case and/or to reduce the amount of time a given employee has to be off campus.
  • Assist with preparation of materials for training relating to current and/or sensitive issues in school law as directed.
  • Stay abreast of religious holy days and practices that may impact student attendance and participation in school-related activities and events.
  • Gather, compile, and submit reports to the General Counsel as needed.
  • Perform paralegal duties as assigned by lawyers employed by Katy ISD. This may include working with outside counsel on certain legal matters.
  • Assist in training staff regarding custody, registration, grievance, and discipline issues
  • Facilitate communications among and between departments and campuses, as appropriate.
  • Utilize district-adopted software systems including, but not limited to, those related to employee attendance, professional learning, and student management
  • Encourage teamwork, collaboration, and partnership within the department to accomplish common goals aligned with district policies and strategies.
  • Notarize documents as required and maintain notary status.
  • Perform all other specified duties as assigned.

Equipment Used:

Personal computer, presentation equipment, audio and video recording equipment, typewriter, printer, copier, calculator, and fax machine.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Will hire, train, and supervise and assistant. This includes cross training on all major areas of responsibility. May have to provide input on supervision of data clerks and registrars as requested by counsel.

Working Conditions:

Maintain emotional control under stress, work with frequent interruptions. Repetitive hand motions. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours as well as moderate lifting. The employee will work in an administrative office environment which may be fast paced and high pressure, with multiple campuses assigned.
