Location: Deerfiled High School
Salary: Stipend as outlined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the District 113 BOE and DEA (Appendix E - Category 4; starting at $5,591)
Position Summary
The Assistant Wrestling Coach supports the Head Coach in leading and developing the wrestling program at Highland Park High School. The position involves assisting in planning and running practices, teaching proper technique, promoting sportsmanship, and supporting athletes’ academic and personal growth. The Assistant Coach contributes to a positive team culture that aligns with the school’s mission and the philosophy of the Athletic Department.
General Coaching Qualifications
- Ability to teach, mentor, and support student-athletes of varying skill levels.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills with athletes, coaches, and families.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, positive, and safe athletic environment.
- Knowledge of sport safety, injury prevention, and IHSA regulations.
- Experience as a wrestling athlete or coach preferred.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification required (or willingness to obtain).
- Completion of IHSA and NFHS coaching certification requirements.
- Schedule indoor practice facilities and schedule busing through Trip Tracker
Sport-Specific Qualifications
- Experience competing in or coaching wrestling at the high school, club, or collegiate level.
- Working knowledge of wrestling fundamentals, conditioning, and match strategy.
- Ability to demonstrate proper technique and assist athletes during drills and live wrestling.
- Understanding of IHSA rules and safe weight management practices.
- Ability to assist with practice organization, scouting, and match preparation.
Essential Functions
- Assist the Head Coach in planning and conducting practices, meets, and tournaments.
- Supervise athletes to ensure safety, discipline, and engagement.
- Provide individualized instruction and feedback during practice and competition.
- Support athlete conditioning, strength training, and skill progression.
- Help manage team communication, equipment, and logistics.
- Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect among athletes.
- Serve as a role model for academic responsibility, effort, and character.
- Support the Head Coach in community outreach, fundraising, and end-of-season events.
Work Schedule (Subject to Change)
- Weekday Practices: 3:45–5:45 PM
- Weekend/No-School Day Practices: 9:00–11:00 AM
- Weeknight Meets: Approximately 3:30–9:00 PM
- Weekend Tournaments: Approximately 6:00 AM–5:00 PM
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Head Coach and Athletic Director.
