The Substitute School Nurse serves as a healthcare provider and support professional during the absence of the Certified School Nurse or Registered Nurse. The substitute nurse ensures students' immediate health needs are addressed and supports the continuation of health-related practices in accordance with district policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

• Current Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) License

• Current CPR-AED Certification

• Computer literacy and ability to use current medical technology

• Experience in pediatric, school, adolescent, or community nursing preferred

• Vision and Hearing Screening Certification (preferred; training available)

• CSN Certification and Baccalaureate Degree (preferred but not required)

Direct Supervisor:
Principal or other designated administrator

Overview:
This is an on-call, as-needed position that follows the school calendar. The substitute nurse supports the delivery of healthcare services to students and staff and helps maintain a safe, healthy school environment. Responsibilities include responding to illness and injury, administering medications per district protocols, and maintaining essential health documentation as directed.

Key Responsibilities:

Health Services & Clinical Support

• Provide direct nursing care including first aid, emergency response, and support for students with chronic conditions

• Administer medications and treatments as per district policies and individual health plans

• Document health office visits and services provided, maintaining confidentiality and accuracy

• Support students with Individual Health Plans (IHPs) or emergency care plans as directed

• Communicate with staff and families as needed regarding student health concerns

Health Office & Record Keeping

• Maintain an organized, efficient, and welcoming health office

• Support the monitoring of student immunization records, physicals, and mandated screenings

• Follow procedures for infection control and universal precautions

• Complete basic reporting or documentation related to student visits and care provided

Collaboration & Communication

• Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to support student health

• Serve as a resource for basic health information and provide guidance to staff and students

• Refer concerns or questions to the full-time nurse or school administration as appropriate

• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions

• Follow established policies and protocols of Grass Lake School District #36

• Serve as a caring, calm, and responsive presence for students who are ill or injured

This is an essential role that ensures continuity of care in the absence of the school nurse and supports the overall wellness of the school community.
