Health Assistant

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Post-secondary education in job related topics preferred
  • Eligible for a New Mexico Instructional Assistant's License
  • Current Red Cross First-Aid certification or equivalent and CPR certification or a willingness to obtain these certifications
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

OVERVIEW OF JOB DESCRIPTION: To assist in the school health program. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follow local, state and federal law and adhere to Public Education Department and Local School Board Policy.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information, builds and maintain sound working relationships with school personnel and the community.
  • Assist in maintaining school health records system.
  • Administer first aid for injuries and illnesses.
  • Assist with screening tests and make routine referrals.
  • Make appropriate referrals to the school nurse for follow-up of student health problems including medical or dental exams.
  • Carry out routine office procedures.
  • Assist with immunization records and recording on health records.
  • Perform nursing tasks as delegated by the school nurse.
  • May supervise students in self-administration of medications.
  • Arrange for proper care of ill students, including notification of parents, if necessary.
  • Assist in non-instructional duties, including but not limited to hall, lunchroom, and grounds monitoring as directed.
  • Perform other relevant tasks as assigned.

REPORTS TO: Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work year to be in accordance with current schedule for 189-day employees. Salary to be determined by individual training and experience level on current Assistant Paraprofessional Salary Schedule.

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.

PHYSICAL LEVEL RATING: This position will require the employee to function at a "medium" physical capacity as defined by Workman's Compensation statutes. "Medium" physical capacity indicates the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally or up to 25 pounds frequently.
