Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

Primary Purpose

Provide direct nursing care to students and staff utilizing school health protocols and individualized care plans established by the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or district school nurse. Administer medications in accordance with Board policy and district procedures. Assist with implementing mandatory health screening programs and maintain required health records and reports to support the physical well-being of students.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

• Graduate of an accredited vocational nursing program.
• Current Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license issued by the Texas Board of Nursing.
• Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid.
• Valid Texas driver's license preferred.

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Knowledge of basic first aid, emergency care procedures, and CPR.
• Knowledge of school health practices and applicable state and federal regulations.
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills.
• Ability to use personal computers and software applications for word processing, databases, electronic health records, and spreadsheets.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of student and employee health information in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA requirements.
• Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, staff, physicians, and community agencies.

Experience

• Experience in pediatric, public health, or school nursing preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Nursing Services

• Provide direct nursing services to students in accordance with physician orders, individualized healthcare plans, and district procedures.
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed and according to district policy and procedures.
• Provide first aid and emergency care for ill or injured students and staff.
• Monitor and document student health conditions and report concerns to the supervising school nurse and campus administration.
• Assist in developing and implementing individual health care plans and emergency action plans for students with medical needs.
• Maintain accurate and confidential health records for students.

Health Screenings and Compliance

• Conduct state-mandated health screenings, including vision, hearing, spinal, and other required screenings.
• Complete and submit all required local, state, and federal reports related to student health services.
• Monitor student immunization records and notify parents of deficiencies in accordance with state law.
• Assist in communicable disease prevention, monitoring, reporting, and follow-up activities.

Health Education and Collaboration

• Provide health education and information to students, staff, and parents as appropriate.
• Communicate with parents regarding student illnesses, injuries, and health concerns.
• Collaborate with campus staff, physicians, and community agencies to coordinate student health services.
• Participate in staff development activities and maintain required certifications and licensure.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Maintain inventory and ensure proper storage of medications and health supplies.
• Ensure compliance with district policies, procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations.
• Prepare and maintain required reports, correspondence, and documentation.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising school nurse or district administration.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

• Maintain emotional control under stress.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, and lifting of students or supplies as necessary.
• May require lifting and positioning students with physical impairments.
• Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
• Work involves frequent interruptions and responding to emergencies.

Terms of Employment

Employment is in accordance with Board policy, administrative regulations, and district compensation plans. Salary and work year are determined by the Board of Trustees.
