Position: ASL Educational Interpreter
Supervisor: Director of Special Education

Summary:

Facilitate communication between the deaf/hard of hearing student and his/her peers, and school staff.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Adhere to confidentiality laws and regulations.
• Work cooperatively with colleagues, supervisors, and administrators.
• Demonstrate ethical behavior.
• Engage in self-development.
• Respond productively to change and handle other tasks as assigned.

• Support the philosophy and mission of Portales Municipal School District.
• Complete other tasks as may be deemed appropriate and necessary by the Director of Special Education or the superintendent.

• Work cooperatively with colleagues, supervisors, and administrators.
• Demonstrate ethical behavior.
• Engage in self development.
• Maintain professional appearance, poise, and self control.
• Follow district policies and administrative rules and regulations.
• Assist in implementing intervention strategies to meet goals of the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
• Communicate information in an unbiased manner.
• Transliterate spoken English to signed English.
• Interpret spoken English into the language of the student.
• Interpret the language of the student into Standard English.
• Meet/plan with classroom teacher to familiarize him/her with language and concepts.
• Convey the social-emotional contents of the message through appropriate facial expressions and body language.
• Abide by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics.
