Assistant/Associate Professor of Family Medicine - Director of Rural Education

Serves the Sam Houston State University Russell & Glenda Gordy College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-GCOM) in the Department of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine.

The University is seeking qualified candidates to join SHSU-GCOM as the Director of Rural Education. The position reports to the Designated Institutional Official. The University is focused on improving the physician workforce in primary care and other specialties identified as a physician shortage in the State of Texas and has developed an integrated curriculum merging basic science instruction with clinical learning and an osteopathic emphasis.

Serve as a core faculty member of our current Rural Family Medicine Residency Program with a mix of direct patient care, teaching, clinical supervision and mentoring of residents and other medical learners, and active participation in scholarly activities. This individual will also lead the effort to expand our current program from 4 residents per year to 6 residents per year, and work to develop at least one new Rural Training Track with one of our clinical partners.

The Director of Rural Education will work with community leaders and potential partners to establish interest and capacity for development of clinical placements for rural training track residents. Identify and apply for grants and other funding to support training opportunities to support rural training sites to further our mission to train primary care physicians for rural and underserved communities in Texas. Oversee application submission for residency accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for new rural training tracks.
