Assistant (1-1 Student) ALE Special Education - Paraprofessional - Schlather Intermediate (C4)

Reports to: Campus Principal & Assigned Teacher(s); Days/Dates: 187

Primary Purpose:

Provide support to the special education teacher in meeting the physical, instructional, and behavioral needs of students with disabilities. Assist in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including instruction, self-help skills, and behavior management. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the direct supervision of a certified teacher.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

• High school diploma or GED
• 48 college hours or have met formal academic assessment as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
• Valid Texas educational aide certificate (School District will assist to obtain)
• Must pass a pre-employment physical examination

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Ability to work effectively with students with disabilities
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Basic knowledge of classroom and office equipment

Experience:

• Two years experience working with children

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Support

• ·Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials, classroom displays, and learning activities
• Support the implementation of IEP goals and instructional programs
• Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce skills and concepts introduced by the teacher
• Assist with classroom organization, inventory, and maintenance of instructional materials and equipment
• Support teachers with administrative tasks, documentation, and required reports
• Provide guidance and assistance to substitute teachers as needed

Student Support and Management

• Assist students with physical needs, including transferring, lifting, positioning, feeding, toileting, and personal hygiene
• Support students in developing independence in self-help and daily living skills
• Help manage student behavior in accordance with IEPs and behavior intervention plans (BIPs), including responding to crisis situations when necessary
• Supervise students throughout the school day, including during transitions, lunch, recess, and bus duty
• Adapt to and support each student’s unique medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
• Maintain awareness of student progress and communicate concerns or changes to the teacher

Other Responsibilities

• Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information at all times
• Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and campus activities as assigned
• Comply with district policies and procedures

Equipment Used:

• Wheelchair lift, ramps, and adaptive equipment (if applicable)
• Specialized equipment as required by student needs (e.g., communication devices, medical supports if applicable

Working Conditions

Mental Demands:

• Maintain emotional control under stress
• Work effectively in a fast-paced, student-centered environment

Physical Demands:

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting
• Regular lifting and positioning of students (may exceed 50–60 pounds)

Environment:

• Work indoors and occasionally outdoors
• Exposure to noise, biological hazards, and communicable diseases
• May require prolonged or irregular hours based on student needs
