About this role
Primary Purpose:
The Library Instructional Paraprofessional supports the daily operations and instructional functions of the campus library. This role ensures efficient circulation, organization, and access to resources while contributing to a safe, welcoming environment for students and staff.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or hold a General Educational Development (GED) certificate
- Have met formal academic assessment, associate’s degree, or two years of study at an institution of higher learning*
Experience:
Experience working with children preferred Experience in a school or library setting preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of library organization, circulation systems, and cataloging procedures
- Ability to work effectively with school-aged students
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to support literacy instruction and student engagement
- Proficient technology and keyboarding skills
- Ability to maintain accurate records and reports
- Ability to follow district and state requirements related to library materials and student access
Experience:
- Experience working with children preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Library Program Support:
- Assist students in locating books and resources matched to their interests and instructional needs.
- Provide individual and small group instruction and assistance to students in using library resources, including the library catalog, databases, digital resources, computers, and instructional equipment.
- Support students in developing reading skills, book selection strategies, and reading comprehension aligned to grade-level standards.
- Conduct interactive live read-alouds that model fluent, expressive reading, strategic thinking and think aloud strategies.
- Prepare materials for classroom or reserve collection use as requested by teachers and staff.
- Develop and deliver, in collaboration with teachers, lessons aligned to high-leverage TEKS and campus instructional needs.
- Align library instruction with district literacy priorities and curriculum frameworks through collaboration with grade levels and content teams
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Other:
- Direct the work of parent volunteers and student aides.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Support additional campus initiatives and operational needs as assigned by the campus administrator.
Student Management:
- Supervise and monitor students in the library and assist in maintaining appropriate student behavior, a safe environment, and an orderly atmosphere.
- Provide a welcoming and inclusive library environment for all students and staff.
- Assist students in developing responsible library use habits and digital citizenship skills.
Clerical Support:
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
- Maintain student records and circulation information within the library management system.
- Ensure parent opt-out requests are honored and communicated appropriately to staff.
- Ensure parents have access to the campus library collection through Destiny on the campus website.
- Receive, process, label, catalog, and shelve new books, materials, donated items, and equipment.
- Assist with evaluating donated materials and recommendations for purchase under the direction of the District Library Services Coordinator and in accordance with district and state requirements.
- Perform routine maintenance and repair of books, materials, and equipment and arrange for repairs as directed.
- Support classroom library acquisitions and ensure classroom library materials are included in Destiny, as applicable.
- Run library collection reports, circulation reports, and other required statistics and records.
Accounting and Inventory:
- Maintain accurate library catalog records and circulation data.
- Assist in the annual inventory and weeding of library materials in accordance with district procedures, Senate Bill 13, and Board Policy EFB (Local).
- Monitor the school library collection to ensure alignment with district School Library Collection Criteria, Senate Bill 13, Board Policy EFB (Local), and campus instructional needs.
- Prepare bulletin boards, displays, and instructional materials that promote literacy, research, and student engagement.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard library equipment including imaging equipment; standard instructional equipment
Posture: Regular sitting, standing, kneeling, squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; regular overhead reaching; climbing ladders
Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); occasional moderate lifting and carrying (15–44 pounds)
Environment: Work inside; work alone; exposure to biological and chemical hazards such as mold and dust
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruption; maintain emotional control under stress
*Required by Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) for aides who are providing instructional support in Title I, Part A program.
