Part Time-Sign Language Interpreter

Description

The primary purpose of this position is to provide reasonable accommodation support to temporary and permanently disabled students at Gulf Coast State College. The sign language interpreter interprets educational and general information exchanged in an educational setting by using manual and oral methods of communication for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Examples of Duties

Interprets lectures, discussions, announcements, conversations, meetings, events, and other spoken word situations using manual sign system appropriate for the language and the cultural background of deaf/hard of hearing students and staff.
Accurately interprets deaf/hard of hearing students' signs into fluent English for other students, faculty, and college staff.
Works with faculty and college departments to gain understanding of relevant concepts to
better facilitate translation for deaf/hard of hearing students.
Works effectively in teams with other sign language interpreters .
May perform a variety of ministerial duties related to the effective operation of programs for the deaf and hard of hearing such as accepting telephone calls, disseminating information, processing correspondence and records, and maintaining files. Embrace feedback and constructive criticism in the spirit of constant improvement.
Demonstrate maturity, humility, professionalism, confidence, and a strong work ethic .
Work schedule is determined by student need with a maximum of 29 hours/week.
Maintains certification by completing continuing education units required by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
Other duties as assigned.
The ability to work flexible hours and regular attendance at work are essential functions of this position

Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED Required AND 1800 hours of paid, volunteer, or family ­related experience as an interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing. Completion of an American Sign Language Interpreting program of at least 30 units or its equivalent is desirable
ORGraduation from an intuitionally accredited four-year college or university with a major in Deaf Students and concentration in ASL/English Interpreting or a closely related field.
National Interpreter Certification from the Registry of interpreters (RID) or a passing score of 4.0 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIP A).
Note: Certification of interpretation (CI) or Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) will be accepted as qualifying.
Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL)
Experience with technology.
Demonstrate ability to interact successfully with individuals and groups at all levels of an organization.
Demonstrate ability to work closely with others in a small and highly collaborative team and multi-task under busy conditions.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Capabilities of computer systems, equipment, and software used in providing interpreting services for the deaf.
Strong attention to detail, self-motivated, and excellent organizational skills.
Ability to handle confidential information on a routine basis.
Certification within 5 years by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf - NIC (Preferred), CI, or CT (Must be eligible/able to test for professional certification when test is available).

WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment requires flexibility.
