TITLE:: Full-Time Painter

REPORTS TO:: Director of Buildings & Grounds

WORK YEAR:: 12 Months - Full-Time

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Buildings & Grounds, performs skilled painting, finishing, surface preparation, wall and ceiling repair, and related maintenance work throughout Argo Community High School facilities and grounds. The Painter is responsible for maintaining interior and exterior surfaces in a safe, clean, attractive, and serviceable condition. Work may be performed in classrooms, offices, corridors, stairwells, restrooms, athletic areas, maintenance spaces, exterior areas, and other District facilities. Work may be assigned individually or in coordination with maintenance, custodial, grounds, contractors, and other District personnel.

WORK SCHEDULE:

This is a full-time, twelve-month position. Regular work hours may differ between the school year and summer months based upon District needs, building occupancy, school activities, construction schedules, and the nature of assigned projects. School-year hours will be established to support District operations and minimize disruption to students and staff. Summer hours may be modified to maximize access to classrooms and other areas for large-scale painting, renovation, and facility improvement work. The employee may be required to work overtime, evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency assignments in accordance with District needs, applicable Board policy, collective bargaining agreement provisions, and law.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Prepares interior and exterior surfaces for painting by cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, filling, caulking, priming, masking, and completing other necessary preparation

• Applies paint, stain, varnish, primers, sealers, epoxies, protective coatings, and other finishing materials using brushes, rollers, sprayers, and other appropriate equipment

• Repairs minor drywall, plaster, wallboard, ceilings, trim, masonry surfaces, and other substrates in preparation for painting and finishing

• Paints classrooms, offices, corridors, stairwells, restrooms, locker rooms, athletic facilities, common areas, maintenance areas, and other District spaces

• Performs exterior painting and coating of doors, frames, railings, equipment, structures, and other appropriate surfaces

• Matches existing paint colors and finishes and assists in maintaining accurate District color and coating records

• Installs, removes, repairs, or replaces wall coverings and similar finish materials as assigned

• Protects floors, furniture, equipment, fixtures, technology, and occupied areas while performing work

• Moves or assists with moving furniture, equipment, and materials necessary to safely complete assigned projects

• Establishes and maintains safe work areas, barricades, ventilation, and signage when work is performed in or near occupied areas

• Uses and maintains ladders, scaffolding, lifts, sprayers, power tools, hand tools, and related equipment safely and properly

• Cleans, maintains, and stores painting tools and equipment in safe and serviceable condition

• Maintains appropriate inventory of paints, coatings, supplies, and commonly used materials and reports replenishment needs

• Properly labels, stores, handles, and disposes of paints, solvents, coatings, chemicals, and related materials

• Complies with applicable safety practices, manufacturer instructions, Safety Data Sheets, District procedures, and OSHA requirements

• Maintains records of completed work, materials used, colors, finishes, and other information as required

• Responds to work orders and adjusts priorities as directed by the Director of Buildings & Grounds or designee

• Reports unsafe conditions, building deficiencies, damaged equipment, and maintenance concerns observed during work

• Maintains work areas in a clean, orderly, and professional condition

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assists maintenance, custodial, and grounds personnel with facility-related duties when reasonably assigned.

• Participates in District in-service training, safety training, and departmental meetings as required.

• Operates District equipment and vehicles as necessary and authorized in the performance of duties.

• Performs other duties consistent with the position as assigned by the Director of Buildings & Grounds or designee.

JOB REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

• Graduation from high school or equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade

Experience:

• Two (2) or more years of professional commercial, institutional, industrial, or comparable painting experience preferred

• Experience with drywall or plaster repair, spray equipment, specialty coatings, or institutional facilities is desirable

Licenses, Certifications and Testing:

• Pre-employment physical and drug test as required by District policy and applicable law

• A current and valid Tuberculosis (TB) clearance or other health clearance as required by law or District policy

• Fingerprint clearance and criminal background check as required for school personnel

• Must possess a valid driver license during the course of employment when required for assigned duties and be insurable by the District liability insurance carrier

• Aerial lift, OSHA, or other applicable safety certification/training desired

Knowledge and Skills Needed:

• Standard principles, methods, materials, equipment, and techniques used in commercial and institutional painting

• Surface preparation methods for drywall, plaster, wood, metal, masonry, concrete, block, and other common building materials

• Proper selection and application of primers, paints, stains, sealers, epoxies, and specialty coatings

• Color matching and maintenance of consistent finish standards

• Preventative maintenance principles and practices related to painted and coated surfaces

• Work hazards, chemical handling, ventilation, personal protective equipment, and safe work practices

• Requirements for maintaining school buildings and work areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition

Ability to:

• Demonstrate skilled professional painting and finishing practices

• Use required tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and sprayers skillfully and safely

• Maintain accurate records and follow work orders, schedules, and District procedures

• Plan and organize work and complete assignments within established timelines

• Identify and prioritize work needs and solve routine problems independently as appropriate

• Work precisely and with attention to detail with limited immediate supervision

• Adapt easily to work assignments, changing priorities, building access, and seasonal schedules
