N9 Salary Scale, 200 days/7.5 hours

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred or actively pursuing.
• Current license to practice as a registered professional nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Valid Virginia driver’s license.
• Minimum of two years acute care nursing experience preferably pediatric or public health or with school age population.
• Ability to work cooperatively with students, parents, school personnel, community professionals and agencies.
• Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Desirable Qualifications:

• Current knowledge in basic first aid and emergency care.
• Experience and/or education in the following areas:

• Human growth and development of childhood and adolescence.
• Psychology of human relations, personality and exceptional children.
• Social problems related to ethnic, cultural and economic factors.
• Health and Physical Assessment
• Legal provisions regarding school health services and child welfare.
• Community assessment
• Communicable disease assessment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Functions as a contributing member of the school health team and the school staff in all aspects of the school health services program.
• Assesses and evaluates the total health and development status of students through nursing assessment and the use of appropriate evaluation techniques, including nursing intervention for acute illness, injury, and emotional disturbance.
• Provides consultation and referral to student’s primary medical care providers for evaluation with treatment and follow-up , if necessary, for suspected health problems.
• Implements and monitors compliance with state law requiring immunization and exclusion of students with contagious diseases.
• Provides information and referral to appropriate community agencies.
• Participates in health screenings, referrals and follow up.
• Provides emergency first aid and direct services to students as needed.
• Provides health education and health counseling to individuals and groups ( including students, staff, parents and community members).
• Develops Individualized Healthcare Plans for students as needed.
• Serves as a resource to faculty and staff.
• Serves as a resource and provides appropriate instruction to clinic/health aids.
• Serves as a child advocate
• Reports suspected child abuse and neglect to Child Protective Services
• Reviews Emergency care cards to determine Health care needs in schools.
• Provides consultation and supervision to clinic aids in implementing health care policies in the schools
• Supports a healthy environment in the schools.
• Assures that the health needs of the school population are considered in the community’s overall health planning
• Coordinates Hepatitis B immunizations
• Makes Home visits as needed
• Attends in-service educational programs appropriate to school health and nursing practice.
• Assists school health personnel in follow-up with students with attendance issues.
• Other duties as assigned.

EVALUATION

• Performed annually by supervising and building administrators in accordance with the school board’s policy and administrative regulations.
• On-site evaluations by the School Community Health Services Coordinator conducted bi-annually.
