Registered Nurse (RN) Substitute

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) Substitute provides temporary nursing services in the absence of the regular school nurse. The substitute promotes the health, safety, and well-being of students and staff by providing nursing care, responding to health concerns, administering medications and treatments as authorized, and supporting a safe learning environment. Assignments are on an as-needed, day-to-day basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide professional nursing care to students and staff during the assigned workday.
• Assess student illnesses and injuries and determine appropriate nursing interventions.
• Administer medications and medical treatments in accordance with physician orders, parent/guardian authorization, district policy, and applicable state laws.
• Accurately chart all student and staff health office visits, nursing assessments, medications, treatments, interventions, communications, and follow-up care in accordance with district procedures and professional nursing standards.
• Respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid, CPR, and other emergency care as needed.
• Monitor students with chronic health conditions and implement individualized healthcare plans, emergency action plans, and physician orders.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential student health records.
• Communicate with parents/guardians, school staff, healthcare providers, and emergency personnel regarding student health concerns when appropriate.
• Determine when students should return to class, remain in the health office, or be dismissed due to illness or injury.
• Promote infection prevention and follow district health and safety protocols.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA (as applicable), and district policies.
• Perform other nursing duties assigned that are consistent with the responsibilities of a registered professional nurse.

Qualifications

• Current Illinois Registered Professional Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
• Current CPR/AED certification.
• Previous pediatric, school nursing, emergency, or community health experience preferred.
• Ability to assess and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently in a school setting.
• Physical/Drug Screen and negative TB test.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to assist students during medical emergencies.
• Ability to safely operate standard office and medical equipment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a school setting with frequent contact with students, staff, parents, and visitors. The position may require responding to emergencies involving illness or injury.

Terms of Employment

This is an on-call substitute position. Employment is at will and assignments are offered based on district operational needs. Acceptance of substitute status does not guarantee any minimum number of workdays or hours.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy and administrative procedures.
