Substitute Nurse, All Schools 26-27

The Substitute School Nurse provides health services to students and staff in the temporary absence of the assigned school nurse. This position ensures the safety, health, and well-being of students by administering first aid, medication, and emergency care, maintaining health records, and promoting healthy school environments.

Substitute School Nurses may be assigned to elementary, middle, or high school settings and must adapt their approach to meet the developmental, emotional, and physical needs of students across grade levels.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Current license as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in New York State (required)
• Current certification in CPR and First Aid (required)
• Prior experience in pediatric, community health, or school nursing preferred
• Ability to work independently and respond effectively in emergency situations
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Knowledge of state and district health policies, immunization requirements, and infection control procedures
• Commitment to confidentiality and professional ethics

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Provide first aid and emergency care for illness and injury among students and staff.
• Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and district policy.
• Maintain accurate, confidential health records, documentation, and daily logs.
• Follow established Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs).
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and administrators regarding student health concerns.
• Monitor and report communicable diseases per district and Department of Health guidelines.
• Manage student health needs during the school day, including chronic condition monitoring (e.g., diabetes, asthma, allergies).
• Promote a safe and healthy school environment through adherence to infection control procedures.
• Collaborate with district nurses and administrators to ensure continuity of care.
• Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism when assigned to different buildings and age groups.
• Maintain a caring, calm, and professional presence with students and staff at all times.

Rate of Pay: $250 per day
Elementary Hours: 7:45 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.
Secondary Hours: 7:45 a.m. - 3 p.m.
