PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Assist in translating of instruction, preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements under the supervision of a speech language pathologist

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

High School Diploma

Paraprofessional Certification for Educational Aide or eligible for certification

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to work well with students Knowledge of general office equipment

Demonstrated proficiency in oral communication in English and Spanish

Preferred Experience:

Previous successful experience working with children

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Instructional Support

  • Assist in producing therapy material and activities
  • Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by the speech language pathologist.

Student Management

  • Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside of the schools.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the personal hygiene of students.
  • Assist in lifting and positioning students as directed by the teacher.
  • Perform or assist with self-help skills for students such as toileting, feeding,
  • Dressing and diaper changes.

Other

  • Perform routine clerical duties.
  • Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as needed.
  • Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; other specialized and adaptive equipment used by students

Posture: Frequent standing; kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking and reaching

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); Occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning or students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases)

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
Other: Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures; Other duties as assigned
