About this role
Reporting to the Director of Climate and Safety, the Climate and Safety Assistant serves as the primary point of contact for families, staff, students and community stakeholders at the central office/administration building. This role is critical to ensuring a welcoming, organized, and secure environment. The Climate & Safety Assistant performs a variety of receptionist, clerical, communication, and safety-related duties, supports daily administrative operations, and represents the District with professionalism and care.
The Climate and Safety Assistant is responsible for the following responsibilities for the Climate & Safety department:
- Ensure the safety and security of the central office entrance through electronic monitoring and established visitor protocols.
- Set up parking lot safety cones in Fire Lane when arriving to work and prior to Board of Education meetings.
- Answer, screen, and direct incoming phone calls; respond to general inquiries and route calls or messages appropriately.
- Greet and assist visitors, families, students, community members, and vendors; ensure compliance with central office safety and security procedures, including sign-in, identification, and visitor badge issuance.
- Perform the duties associated with completing the District 65 staff ID badge process using the Sonitrol System.
- Manage and maintain visitor log records and electronic badge auditing databases.
- Conduct routine safety checks and monitor school perimeters to ensure a secure environment at Joseph E. Hill Administration Building.
- Assist with building video monitoring through District 65 surveillance systems.
- Monitor central office emergency alarm systems and coordinate prompt response with emergency service personnel.
- Support the facilitation and implementation of emergency preparedness drills for the central office building.
- Deliver frontline conflict resolution and de-escalation support while triaging and reporting potential security risks to proper safety personnel.
- Attend Climate and Safety team meetings and in-service meetings to exchange information and support departmental initiatives.
- Assist with special projects, events, or audits related to Climate and Safety operations as assigned.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to ensure efficiencies at Joseph E. Hill and Climate and Safety team operations.
In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Climate and Safety Assistant must possess the following qualifications:
Education:
• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
Experience:
- Previous experience as an administrative support, customer service, security, or emergency management, minimum two (2) years preferred.
- Prior experience in an educational or public sector environment is preferred.

• Collaboration: Works effectively within multidisciplinary teams (administrators, social workers, teachers) to support student growth and school safety.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Standing, lifting, carrying, pushing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, walking, sitting, handling, keyboarding, talking, hearing; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing.
Lifting Demands: Up to 50 pounds
Reaching Activities: Both dominant and non-dominant hand; overhead.
Environmental Conditions: Noise Intensity 3 moderate, generally a clean and healthy environment.
