Position Title: Wrestling Referee
Department/Section: Mount Elden Middle School
Supervisor: Athletic Director/ Principal

Job Summary: Middle school wrestling referees enforce rules, ensure competitor safety, and manage matches objectively during middle school wrestling meets and tournaments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enforce Regulations: Apply state AIA wrestling rules consistently.
  • Ensure Safety: Inspect mats, check competitor fingernails, verify hair length, and monitor skin health before matches.
  • Control Matches: Signal points, infractions, falls, and out-of-bounds boundaries clearly using official hand signals.
  • Manage Time: Verify proper match timing, including period lengths, injury clocks, and recovery time limits.
  • Maintain Discipline: Manage coach, wrestler, and spectator behavior to ensure a respectful, sportsmanlike environment.
  • Certify Results: Verify final scores and declare the official winner at the conclusion of each match.

Qualifications:

  • Education & Certification: High school diploma or equivalent. Certification from AIA is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge: Strong, up-to-date working knowledge of folkstyle wrestling rules and regulations.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to move quickly on the mat, change levels, and maintain focus during long tournaments.
  • Patience: Ability to mentor young athletes who are still learning the basic rules of the sport.
  • Decisiveness: Capability to make split-second, objective judgements under pressure from crowds and coaches.
  • Communication: Clear verbal skills to explain infractions calmly to middle-school-aged competitors
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card: Must hold a valid, up-to-date fingerprint clearance card for the state of Arizona.
  • Background Check: Must clear standard youth-protection background checks required by the school district.

Expectations:

  • Professionalism: Wear the required officials' uniform and arrive on-site at least 15-20 minutes prior to meet time.
  • Reliability: Commit to scheduled meets as assigned by the athletic director.

  • Meets are sporadic throughout the season, and the athletic director will give you dates ASAP.
