Position: American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter
Purpose: The ASL Interpreter provides communication access for an assigned student who is deaf or hard of hearing during instruction, peer interactions, and other school activities, consistent with the student's IEP and communication needs. The interpreter translates verbal communication into American Sign Language to facilitate the communication process for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and is responsible for interpreting instruction, movies, class discussion, assignments and pertinent information for students as necessary.

10-month (works student calendar)
12-month
7 paid hours/day (7.5 hrs/day including a duty free lunch of 35 minutes)
Essential Functions:
• Translates verbal information presented in class, or other assigned activities, for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Translates American Sign Language from students who are deaf or hard of hearing for teachers/students.
• Translates for seminars, classes, examinations, meetings, conferences as appropriate.
• Reviews instructional materials in advance and collaborates with teachers and service providers to identify and address communication barriers.
• Perform other such duties as may be assigned by the Special Education Supervisor.
Additional Duties:
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Building Principal and other Central Office Administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Fluency in American Sign Language and the ability to interpret accurately between spoken English and ASL
• Knowledge of Deaf culture and the communication needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
• Knowledge of interpreter ethics and the ability to maintain confidentiality of student information
• Understanding of the IEP process and the interpreter's role on a student's support team preferred
• Ability to adjust interpreting to a student's age, language level, and subject matter
• Ability to prepare in advance and collaborate with teachers and service providers
• Ability to maintain focus and accuracy during extended periods of interpreting
• Ability to support student independence and adapt to changing schedules and settings
Qualifications Profile
Certification/License
National Interpreter Certificate (NIC), Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) preferred
Education Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:
Two years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in providing American Sign Language interpretation services, OR possession of a National Interpreter Certificate (NIC) recognized by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf; OR Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in American Sign Language Interpretation or a closely related field
Experience
Prior interpreting experience preferred; experience interpreting in a school setting preferred
Demands, Hazards:

Equipment:
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone
Travel: Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
