Operational Substitute Job Description

Reports To: Department Supervisor or Building Principal
Employment Status: Substitute – As Needed

Position Summary

Operational Substitute Employees provide temporary support for a variety of district operational positions to ensure the continued safe, efficient, and effective operation of Maumee City Schools. Assignments may include Buildings & Grounds, Food Service, Clerical, Student Monitor, Transportation Monitor, Paraeducator/Classroom Assistant, Clerk Librarian, and other operational support positions as needed. Duties vary by assignment but always require professionalism, flexibility, reliability, and a commitment to student safety and customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Successful BCI and FBI criminal background checks
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of assigned work
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to complete required annual training
  • Additional licenses or certifications as required for specific assignments (e.g., CDL, Educational Aide Permit)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Report to assigned location on time and follow all daily check-in/check-out procedures.
  • Perform duties specific to the assigned operational position in accordance with supervisor expectations.
  • Follow all district policies, procedures, safety practices, and emergency protocols.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and professional work environment.
  • Provide courteous, respectful service to students, staff, families, and visitors.
  • Supervise students appropriately when responsibilities include student interaction.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student, employee, and district information.
  • Properly use district equipment, materials, and technology.
  • Report accidents, injuries, safety concerns, behavioral concerns, or maintenance issues promptly.
  • Complete assigned work accurately and efficiently while demonstrating initiative and flexibility.
  • Accept temporary reassignment when operational needs require.
  • Complete all required annual training and maintain required credentials.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, and ethical conduct at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or department supervisor.

Working Conditions

Operational substitute assignments may include indoor and outdoor work environments. Employees may be required to stand, walk, bend, lift, push, pull, operate equipment, or supervise students for extended periods. Physical demands vary by assignment and may include lifting, cleaning, food preparation, student assistance, clerical work, or custodial responsibilities.
