Occupational Therapist (A4)

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education; DAYS/DATE(S): 187 Primary Purpose Evaluate, plan and provide occupational therapy to students with mental, physical, or emotional disabilities in need of these related services in order to benefit from special education and access their educational environment. Provide school-based therapeutic intervention to maximize physical or mental functioning, and/or increase independent functioning. Qualifications Education/Certification: • Bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy or related program • Valid Texas license as an occupational therapist granted by the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners • Valid driver's license with driving record that meets District requirements Special Knowledge/Skills: • Knowledge of rehabilitation procedures, activities, and equipment used in school-based occupational therapy services • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills • Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with faculty, students, parents, and members in the community EXPERIENCE: • Minimum of six months experience in a school setting is preferred Major Responsibilities and Duties • Plan and provide direct and indirect services consistent with occupational therapy goals contained in students’ Individual Education Plans (IEP). • Assess students with disabilities and determine eligibility for services • Evaluate student progress and determine what, if any, occupational therapy services are appropriate. • Design, construct, alter, and provide students with adaptive equipment and devices to promote maximum independence. • Provide staff development training to assist school personnel with use of adaptive equipment and understanding of school based occupational therapy. • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students. • Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents. • Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, development of PLAAFPs and IEP goal setting. • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records and other documents required. • Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students, parents, campus staff and colleagues. • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy. • Comply with all district and campus routines, procedures and regulations. • Perform other duties as assigned. Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: • Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate lifting. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchairs or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities. Travel will be required between the campuses and around the district.
