Substitute

Primary Purpose:

To enable each child to pursue an education as smoothly and completely as possible in the absence of the regular teacher.

Qualifications:

Minimum 48 Hours of college coursework (College Degree Preferred)

Valid Teaching Certificate (if applicable)

Communication Skills: verbal/ written

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• Reports to the building principal or school secretary upon arrival at the school building.
• Reviews with the principal, department head, or team leader all plans and schedules to be followed during the day.
• Maintains the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned.
• Teaches the lesson outlined in the Substitute Teacher’s Guide as prepared by the absent teacher.
• Assumes responsibility for overseeing pupil behavior in class, during lunch, recess periods, and other duties assigned.
• Reports on the day’s activities at the conclusion of each day through the substitute calling system.
• Follows all policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates.
• Works cooperatively with other members of the staff to reach the goals and objectives of each campus.
• Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
• Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
• Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Working Conditions/Mental Demands:

Ability to instruct while maintaining emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.

Terms of Employment:

On a daily basis as needed. Salary is to be established by the Board.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel. The Superintendent or designee shall have authority to remove a substitute teacher’s name from the list for “good cause”.
