Use this template for a general K-12 classroom teacher and adapt it by grade and subject. Every state requires a license that matches the assignment, and some now limit uncertified teachers in core subjects, so the state requirements below matter.

- Background check with fingerprints, under your state's rules.
Texas requirements
- Certificate by assignment. Texas Education Code §21.003 requires an appropriate certificate or permit, and 19 TAC Chapter 231 lists which certificates allow each assignment. Name the certificate exactly, for example "Mathematics: 7-12" or "Core Subjects with Science of Teaching Reading: EC-6."
- HB 2 and uncertified teachers. Districts may not employ uncertified teachers of record in foundation curriculum courses (English language arts and reading, math, science and social studies), with Districts of Innovation phasing in through 2027-28 unless approved for a later plan, according to TEA (opens in a new tab).
