26-27 Substitute Paraprofessional

Position Summary

The Substitute Paraprofessional provides support to students, teachers, and school staff in the absence of a regular paraprofessional. Under the direction of a certified teacher or administrator, the substitute paraprofessional assists with instructional activities, classroom management, student supervision, and the implementation of individualized student supports while helping maintain a safe, positive, and productive learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist teachers in implementing instructional activities and classroom routines.
• Provide academic, behavioral, and organizational support to individual students or small groups as directed.
• Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, study halls, and other assigned areas.
• Support classroom management by reinforcing school and classroom expectations.
• Assist students with assignments, organization, and classroom activities under the direction of certified staff.
• Provide assistance to students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and district procedures, as assigned.
• Assist with monitoring student behavior and report concerns to the supervising teacher or administrator.
• Help prepare instructional materials and maintain an organized classroom environment.
• Monitor student use of technology and reinforce district technology policies.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student information in accordance with state and federal laws.
• Follow all district safety procedures, emergency protocols, and school policies.
• Adapt to assignments in different classrooms, grade levels, and buildings as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee.

Qualifications

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Hold a valid Educational Aide Permit issued by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) or be eligible to obtain one prior to employment.
• Ability to work effectively with students of varying ages and abilities.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, administrators, staff, students, and families.
• Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, flexibility, and sound judgment.
• Successful completion of all required background checks and pre-employment requirements.

Preferred

• Previous experience working with children or adolescents in an educational setting.
• Experience supporting students with disabilities or diverse learning needs.
• Knowledge of positive behavior support strategies.
• CPR/First Aid certification (if required by the district).

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move throughout the school day.
• Ability to assist students with mobility or personal care needs, when assigned and trained.
• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally or more when required as part of assigned duties and in accordance with district procedures.
• Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a school environment and may include assignments in general education classrooms, special education classrooms, intervention settings, cafeterias, playgrounds, and other instructional or supervisory areas. Substitute paraprofessionals must be flexible and able to adapt to changing assignments and schedules.
