26-27 Substitute Teacher

Position Summary

The Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing instructional continuity in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The substitute teacher implements lesson plans, maintains a positive and orderly classroom environment, promotes student learning, and ensures the safety and well-being of students while adhering to district policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Implement lesson plans and instructional activities provided by the regular classroom teacher.
• Maintain a safe, respectful, and productive classroom environment.
• Manage student behavior in accordance with district policies and established classroom expectations.
• Take attendance and maintain accurate records as required.
• Provide instruction across grade levels and subject areas as assigned.
• Supervise students throughout the school day, including during classroom transitions, lunch, recess, or other assigned duties.
• Monitor student progress during assigned activities and provide feedback to the regular teacher regarding student performance, behavior, and completed work.
• Adapt to changing assignments and classroom environments while maintaining instructional continuity.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with state and federal laws.
• Follow all district safety procedures, emergency protocols, and school policies.
• Communicate professionally with administrators, staff, students, and parents as appropriate.
• Leave the classroom in an orderly condition and provide written notes for the regular teacher regarding the day's activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee.

Qualifications

Required

• Hold a valid Substitute Teaching License issued by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) or be eligible to obtain one prior to employment.
• Ability to effectively supervise and engage students in a classroom setting.
• Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to adapt quickly to different grade levels, subject areas, and school environments.
• Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and sound judgment.
• Successful completion of all required background checks and pre-employment requirements.

Preferred

• Previous teaching or substitute teaching experience.
• Experience working with children or adolescents in an educational setting.
• Knowledge of instructional technology commonly used in schools.
• CPR/First Aid certification (if required by the district).

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the classroom and school building for extended periods.
• Ability to supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and other school settings.
• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
• Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a school environment and may involve assignments at various grade levels, subject areas, and school buildings throughout the district. Substitute teachers must be flexible and able to adapt to changing schedules and classroom assignments.
