Job Summary

• The Nutley Public Schools Music Program strives to provide a comprehensive music education experience at the elementary level. Students begin music instruction in kindergarten and continue their music education through the fifth grade. The ideal candidate for this position will be an expert in general music pedagogy, have strong piano skills and experience with Orff and Kodaly instruction as well as experience in teaching choir. Band and/or string instruction experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
• NJ State Certification as Music Teacher or as required for position.
• Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

Essential Functions

• Strong piano skills and proficiency necessary
• Instrumental (band/strings) background preferred
• Strong Choir instruction skills
• Develops and administers school music curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
• Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for music instruction.
• Conducts ongoing assessment of student skills and learning in music techniques and expression, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
• Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
• Instructs pupils in proper care and use of musical instruments and equipment used in music classes.
• Evaluates each pupil's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepares progress reports.
• Ability to adjust instructional strategies in order to reach musical goals
• The ability to motivate and challenge students and maintain a highly orderly music classroom environment
• Receptiveness to feedback and a desire to continuously improve
• A strong sense of personal accountability for student achievement
• A belief that all students should be held to high musical standards
• A positive attitude and a drive for personal excellence
• Orff - Certification preferred, experience necessary
• Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
• Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
• Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
• Coordinates with other school professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.

General Duties & Responsibilities

• Uphold and enforce school, administrative, board and state rules, regulations and policies.
• Implement the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
• Assume responsibility for condition of assigned room(s) and for equipment and materials issued for his/her use.
• Communicate with parents and school personnel as necessary to discuss pupil progress under direction of the building principal.
• Maintain required records, completes reports, and handles other routine assignments in an appropriate and punctual manner.
• Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs as assigned.
• Maintain standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive school and classroom environment.
• Maintain professional development through participation in such activities as in-service education, workshops, and self-selected professional growth activities.
• Attend school-related night activities when necessary and according to school policy.
• Maintain a safe school environment.
• Identify pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve learning, social, and attitude problems.
• Promote satisfactory pupil progress and growth toward curriculum objectives
• Group students for instructional purposes or activities so as to enhance pupil performance and provide for individual needs.
• Perform other duties or responsibilities assigned by the building principal or central office administrators.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge of current music instructional teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
• Knowledge of music curriculum and concepts.
• Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
• Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
• Ability to organize and coordinate work.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
• Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Evaluation of Performance

• Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the New Jersey Administrative Code and Board of Education Policy.

Additional Duties

• Organize and perform concerts with students
• Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Travel Requirements

• Travel between two (2) elementary schools
• Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Work Schedule

• Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the EAN Teachers' Union Contract.

Experience

• Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
