The North Plainfield School District invites applications for Girls Varsity and JV Assistant Basketball Game Coaches at North Plainfield High School.
North Plainfield serves approximately 3,500 students in grades PreK�12 and is committed to providing an inclusive environment where all students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
The Girls Varsity and JV Assistant Basketball Game Coaches are responsible for aiding the Head Coach in leading, organizing, and supervising the Girls Basketball program. The assistant coaches will focus on technical skill development, tactical instruction, team conditioning, and game preparation across both Varsity and Junior Varsity levels, with primary game-day coaching duties for the JV squad as assigned.
The candidates will model positive sportsmanship, prioritize academic success, and enforce district athletic policies.
Responsibilities
Instruction & Athlete Development
- Assist the Head Coach in planning, executing, and evaluating daily practice sessions for both Varsity and JV teams.
- Provide targeted, individual and small-group instruction focusing on core skill sets (dribbling, shooting, passing ,footwork, and defensive positioning).
- Support the implementation of offensive and defensive team concepts established by the Head Coach to ensure program consistency across all levels.
- Analyze game film and opponent scouting reports to assist in game preparation.
Game-Day Operations & Supervision
- Serve as the primary coach for Junior Varsity games, managing bench strategy, playing time, and in-game adjustments under the direction of the Head Coach.
- Assist on the Varsity bench during games (e.g., maintaining scorebooks/stat sheets, tracking fouls/timeouts, offering real-time player feedback).
- Manage pre-game warm-ups and post-game debriefs for the JV squad.
Student Safety, Welfare & Eligibility
- Supervision: Maintain direct, uninterrupted supervision of student-athletes in locker rooms, gymnasium facilities, weight rooms, and during team bus transit.
- Clearance Compliance: Strictly enforce that no student participates in practices or games without complete medical,physical, and administrative clearances.
- Academic Monitoring: Monitor player academic progress throughout the season; assist the Head Coach in identifying struggling students and connecting them with tutoring or support resources.
- Injury Protocols: Immediately report injuries to the Certified Athletic Trainer and Athletic Office; strictly adhere to return-to-play protocols.
Administrative & Program Support
- Assist with the distribution, care, inventory, and collection of uniforms, athletic gear, and training equipment.
- Enforce all district, league, and state athletic association (NJSIAA) rules, regulations, and sportsmanship standards.
- Promote a positive, inclusive culture that emphasizes team unity, character development, and academic excellence.
- Perform additional program-related duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.
Qualifications
Valid State Teaching Certification or State Substitute Credential. High School Diploma or equivalent required (Bachelor's degree preferred).
Successful high school or collegiate playing/coaching experience in basketball preferred. In-depth knowledge of basketball rules, fundamental techniques, defensive/offensive strategies, and conditioning methods.
Mandatory State & District Clearances: Approved Criminal History Background Check / Fingerprinting clearance. Current Medical Physical Clearance.
Required Certifications (or willingness to complete prior to start date): Current CPR / AED / First Aid Certification. NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Certification. NFHS Concussion in Sports Certification. NFHS Sudden Cardiac Arrest & Heat Illness Prevention Certifications.
Skills & Attributes
Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to mentor high school student-athletes effectively and maintain high ethical standards. Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.
